Description

LYKOURGOS ANGELOPOULOS
Born in Pyrgos, Ilia, in 1941, he studied law at the Athens University and Byzantine music under Simon Karas at the Association for the Dissemination of Greek National Music. He is the founder and artistic director of the Greek Byzantine Choir.
Lykourgos Angelopoulos has interpreted works of modern music, principally those written by Michalis Adamis, Dimitris Terzakis, Kyriakos Sfetsas, Yorghos Kyriakis and John Tavener. He takes part in the Marcel Pérès research team and has recorded Byzantine, Old Roman and Ambrosian chant as well as others of the old western chant in discs issued in France with the Ensemble Organum. His work, Les voix de Byzance was published in France in 2005.
He has written numerous articles on the subject of Byzantine music.
In 1994, HAH the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew awarded him the office of Archon Precentor of the All Holy Archdiocese of Constantinople. Angelopoulos has also be honoured by his Beatitude the Patriarch of Jerusalemn Diodoros, the Church of Finland as well as numerous Cathedrals of the Church of Greece. The Venerable Holy Synod of the Church of Greece has twice awarded him its favour and, in 2006, the Medal of the Apostle Paul. In 2004, the President of the Hellenic Republic Constantinos Stephanopoulos awarded him the honorary distinction of the Silver Cross of the Order of the Palm.

The Greek Byzantine Choir was founded in 1977 by Lycourgos Angelopoulos, with the view of presenting to the public the traditional Byzantine Music as transmitted until the present day by both the oral and written tradition. This choir also aims at preserving the genuine Byzantine tradition by freeing it from the influence of Central Europe, wich is extraneous to it. The appearance of this Choir marks an important step in Lycourgos Angelopoulos's constant effort to protect the musical heritage.
The Greek Byzantine Choir has performed at more than 1000 concerts and liturgical events in Greece and in 31 other countries of Europe, Asia, America, and the Eastern Mediterranean.
